Guess what? Your union is more than just a cheap bar! You are now a part of the largest Student Union in Europe. Your union works to represent you as a University of Manchester student. We are about campaigning, debating creating and innovative ideas and everything that we achieve is student led and run.
I'm Amaya, your Student Activities Officer for 2011 - 2012

I am one of the elected executive officers and you can find me in the union downstairs in the activities centre. Its my job to deal with all things societies. Societies are basically social groups with a specific interest or aim. We have over 200 and they cover a huge variety of things, from circus skills to course subjects to animal rights to bhangra and everything in between.
Our societies are given a minimum amount of £2 per member for up to 250 people. We also have a STARS system which means that societies can go silver or gold and obtain more funding per member and other nice things like more room booking allowances. All the information you need is in the societies handbook which can be collected from the activities centre or see the Societies page.

The other part of my job is to facilitate student led events and to organize some union events myself. The biggest event we run is Pangaea Festivals - a 4000 person all night party run twice a year. Click the Big Events link on the left hand side to see what else we get up to.

Student Media
Fancy trying your hand at being a journalist or radio presenter? Your students union hosts the biggest student-run newspaper in the UK (Student Direct: The Mancunion) and an impressive student-run radio station (Fuse FM). See our Student Media pages here and get involved.
If you want to do some good in your community, you can get involved in Student Action, who organise volunteering projects for students, everything from looking after the elderly to teaching sports in primary schools. You can also get involved in Manchester RAG (Raising And Giving) who put on fun events and hairbrained schemes to raise money for charity. All great ways to meet some new and interesting people.
