Aims

The aim of the Manchester University Buddhist Society is to provide an opportunity for those who wish to learn about Buddhism, however much or however little they already know. The Society is not confined to any particular school, and is interested in theoretical and practical aspects of Buddhism. The two main activities of the Society are a weekly meditation class and a program of talks by guest speakers. Whatever the interest everyone is very welcome!

History

The society was started in 1971 and has been holding mediation classes and inviting speakers since then. Over the last 32 years many eminent authorities on Buddhism in this country, and abroad, have been invited to give a talk. These include: Ven. Achan Sumedo, a senior monk in the Amaravati sanghas, Ananda Maitreya, a distinguished Pali and Sanskrit scholar; Jampa Thaye, from Kagyu Ling; Ninian Smart, an internationally known writer on comparative religion; Karel Werner, an eminent scholar and teacher of Yoga and Meditation; Russell Williams, from the Buddhist Society of Manchester; Ven. Ato Rimpoche to name but a few.
