Thursday Talks
Speakers from all areas of Buddhism are invited by the Society to give talks.
These talks cover a variety of areas, including
Buddhist Dhamma sermons, how we can apply mindfulness and loving
kindness in everyday life, the importance of meditation, the relevance
of Buddhist teachings to the modern world, Buddhism as a religion etc.
The talks are open to anyone with an interest in
Buddhism. They also provide a fertile environment for people practising
meditation.
Speakers include Meditation teachers, Monks, Nuns and Academics.

20/08 Ven Piyatissa with Professor Bhikku Dhammavihari “The Fundamental Teachings of Buddhism”
Venerable Piyatissa is a Sri Lankan Theravada Buddhist monk. He is the head monk of the Ketumati Buddhist Vihara in Oldham. He has been a Buddhist monk for more than 30 years and has been in the UK for more than 17 years. He is also the Buddhist Honorary Chaplain at St Peters Chaplaincy, and visits the chaplaincy every Thursday in term to lead Pali sutta study classes.
Professor Bhikkhu Dhammavihari is a former lecturer in Buddhism and has written many prominent articles on Buddhism and sociology.
04/10 Dr Simon Child
Dr Simon Child is a founder member of the Western Chan Fellowship, and has been the secretary of the charity since it was founded in 1997. He is also a practising GP in the Manchester area.
11/10 Koolin – cancelled
Koolin is currently the head of the Manchester Kwan Um School of Zen in Chorlton. She also has a long history of involvement in various Buddhist movements in the UK, the US and Asia.
18/10 Sr Susthama
Sr Susthama is a member of the Amida Trust, a Pureland Buddhist Sangha, who also runs retreats at their centre in Leicestershire. Their website is http://www.amidatrust.com
25/10 Venerable Nyanujotthar Bhivamsa
Venerable Bhivamsa is a Burmese Theravada Buddhist monk. He is the abbot of the Saraniya Dhamma meditation Centre, Lower Broughton Road, Salford. The temple does meditation classes and retreats in the Mahasi Sayadaw technique of Vipassana meditation, while also functioning as a traditional Burmese Buddhist temple. 1/11 Gordon Ellis
Gordon is the co-founder of Tara Buddhist Centre in Derbyshire and a teacher at Diamond Heart Foundation in Cheshire. He is a counsellor, psychotherapist, academic at the University of Salford and writer of articles in various magazines and journals. He is an accomplished meditation teacher in Tibetan Buddhism and has taught meditation for more than 15 years, often at the invitation of Tibetan Lamas.
8/11 Jonathan Macaskill
Jonathan is a meditation teacher at Kagyu Ling Buddhist Centre in Chorlton and an experienced student of Lama Jampa Thaye, a master of both the Kagyu and Sakya traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. Lama Jampa is a former lecturer in Buddhism at Manchester University and has written many books related to Tibetan Buddhist philosophy and meditation practice. He is the student of Karma Thinley Rinpoche and is the spiritual director of Dechen community. Its website is http://www.dechen.org

Alan Smith is head of the Manchester Zen Dojo of the International Zen Association. They facilitate and promote the practice of zazen and the zen teachings of the late Master Deshimaru. Their website is : http://www.izauk.org
29/11 Usha MacNab
Usha is a founder member of this society, a founder member of the Samatha Trust in UK, which runs the Manchester Centre for Buddhist meditation in Chorlton, Manchester. She is also an experienced meditation teacher in the Samatha tradition, founded by Nai Boonman, a former Tharavada Thai Buddhist monk. Their website is at http://www.samatha.org

07/02 Prof. Karel Werner “Death , birth and personal identity in Buddhism”
Professor Werner is an academic at SOAS, London. He is the writer of many articles and books on Buddhism and eastern philosophy, and an editor of numerous publications. He has given a talk to our society for 35 years, almost every year since our formation.
14/02 Dr. Francesca Tarocco "Buddhist music and ritual"
Dr Francesca Tarocco is a Leverhulme Trust Research Fellow and Lecturer in Buddhist Studies here at the University of Manchester. She has written many articles and books on Buddhism.
21/02 Pat McDonald
Pat is a teacher at the Longchen Foundation which was set up by H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche as a vehicle for the Dzogchen teaching of the Tibetan tradition under the guidance of Rigdzin Shikpo, the current lineage holder.
