Websites
You can upload a website by placing the files you wish to be available in a pubwww directory. They will then be available at http://www.umu.man.ac.uk/USERNAME where USERNAME is the username you use to login. If you wish to run CGI scripts, you can run them from anywhere, not just a cgi-bin directory.
Disc Space
There are no enforced restrictions on disc space other than physical space
available on the machine. If you wish to use more than
several hundred Mb for more than a long time, root@umu.man.ac.uk
would appreciate being informed in advance. There is up to several Gigabytes of space which can be
made available for societies to use for temporary use. The Administrators do not object to large
amount of disc space being used, but would prefer to know in advance, so two or more societies
don't try to use the same large amount of disc space at the same time; and hence reduce the
service all societies get.
Website Statistics
Detailed information about the number and nature of visitors to your site can be obtained by studying the
statistics collected by our server
Advanced Services
Our webserver runs Perl 5.8, PHP 5, and has MySQL enabled for those who wish to use it (although you need to ask for a MySQL account to be setup). If you wish to use something not listed, or find out whether something else is installed please enquire below.
The order that the webserver looks for index files when given a directory is
index.html index.htm index.php index.php3 index.shtml index.cgi index.pl index.sht index.phtml index.phtm
and the first name in that list that is found matches. As a result, if necessary, you can use a static file
for those who look at your website; but a later entry in the list for development work.
E.g. if you have both index.html and index.php , then index.html will be found as a preference; but using index.php will also work
for those who know it exists. At a later point, removing index.html will cause the index.php to be used without
any other changes to your site.
The services described here are for University of Manchester Students' Union registered societies only. All requests must be made from yoursociety@umsu.man.ac.uk to root@umsu.man.ac.uk.
